Sherman United Methodist Church Library
and Resource Center
Our Mission:
— Provide resources that support the members, pastor, church leaders, youth and the local community.
— Provide appropriate reading materials for all ages, ranging from pre-school through adults.
— Provide materials for Christian education leaders.
— Support an area for study, quiet reading, book discussions.
— Provide materials that increase knowledge of the Bible, the Christian faith, the United Methodist Church, John Wesley, other Christian religions and world religions, as well as African American history, Hispanic, Native American and women’s history and the study of other races, ethnics, and cultures.
— Provide support for the United Methodist Women’s reading program.
— Host book talks.
Our Collection
In the collection are materials on various subjects and in all formats including books, magazines, videos, DVDs, and CDs. The holdings include Bible dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, and commentaries. There are books by Christian authors, on spiritual development, devotionals, self-help, life and teachings of Jesus Christ, Advent, Lent, Christmas, Kwanzaa and subjects related to Christian life, leadership. The collection also includes biographies, Christian fiction, cookbooks, and a large collection of children’s books. The Library collaborates with the church historian in documenting the history of the church and maintaining archival materials that include church bulletins, special occasion programs and funeral programs.
Volunteers are needed to assist the Library Board members with the following:
— Prepare bulletin boards and other displays.
— Assist with processing new books and other library materials.
— Shelf read and straighten library shelves regularly.
— Assist with inventory and weeding.
— Assist library users in locating materials
Donations
The SUMC Resource Center welcomes monetary donations as well as gifts of library materials (books, DVD’s). For all materials that we keep, we will acknowledge the gift in writing for tax purposes. The Library reserves the right to reject materials donated that are not deemed appropriate for the church and its congregation. For donated materials that we do not add, we will sell in a book sale, donate to another library or individuals that can use them or discard. Proceeds from book sales will support the church and the library collection. Once materials are accepted and received, they become the property of the library. The library reserves the right to make all necessary decisions as to their retention, location, cataloging treatment, and other considerations regarding their use and disposition.
Donors can provide an estimated donation value if one is needed, as the SUMC Resource Center will not appraise the gifts.
